NHTSA Initiates Probe into Fisker Ocean SUVs over Automatic Emergency Braking System Issues

Posted on May 14, 2024May 14, 2024 by thecruisectrlr

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation into 6,813 Fisker Ocean SUVs manufactured in 2023. This action follows complaints regarding the inadvertent activation of the automatic emergency braking system in these electric vehicles.

According to the regulator, its Office of Defects Investigation has received eight reports citing the unexpected activation of the braking system, leading to sudden vehicle deceleration despite no apparent roadway obstruction in the vehicle’s forward path. Of these complaints, three reported injuries.

NHTSA’s preliminary evaluation aims to assess the scope and severity of the potential issue and its impact on safety. Depending on the findings, the investigation could lead to regulatory action or closure without further measures.

This probe compounds Fisker’s challenges, as its Ocean SUVs were already under NHTSA investigation for previous incidents related to door malfunctions. Moreover, the startup recently faced financial uncertainties, including doubts about its financial viability, stock delisting, and failed negotiations with potential partners.

In April, Fisker missed an interest payment on notes due in 2026, leading to insolvency proceedings for its Austrian unit. The company seeks strategic solutions to address its financial obligations and ensure its operational continuity.
