Rejoice: Toyota Plans Ongoing Upgrade Kits for GR Corolla Owners

Toyota’s popular GR Corolla hot hatch, which launched in 2022, receives annual enhancements. To ensure long-term satisfaction, the company is committing to provide upgrade kits for earlier models using components from newer versions whenever feasible.

At a recent Toyota event in California, Motor1 had the chance to chat with Chief Engineer Naoyuki Sakamoto. He revealed that the push for these retrofits originated from the highest levels of the organization.

“We can’t overlook existing owners,” Sakamoto explained. “Morizo-san constantly reminds me to prioritize them, so we’ve prepared these upgrade kits accordingly.” For context, “Morizo” is the racing alias of Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, a vocal champion of the GR lineup, particularly the Corolla variant.

This approach isn’t entirely new—it kicked off in 2024. That year, owners of 2023 models could purchase a kit featuring updated steering rack bolts, rear subframe bolts, front air curtain ducts, and aluminum tape to optimize aerodynamics by reducing electrostatic buildup. These parts were directly sourced from 2024 vehicles, and Toyota intends to follow suit for 2025 models where applicable.

Although not officially verified, these 2025 components are expected to be accessible via Toyota dealerships. During the event, Sakamoto demonstrated the revised rear suspension on the 2025 model, which boosts anti-squat geometry, along with firmer springs and enhanced rear dampers. These elements appeared straightforward to install, allowing 2023 and 2024 GR Corolla drivers to potentially bring their cars up to 2025 standards with relative ease. The initiative will also apply to the international GR Yaris.

That said, certain 2026 features—like improved speakers, synthetic engine noise, and specialized body adhesives—won’t be retrofittable due to their integrated nature. However, practical bolt-on modifications should sustain owner enthusiasm for years, as they significantly enhance the car’s handling and performance. Having driven a base 2023 model, an upgraded 2023, a 2025, and a 2026 version myself, I can attest that even simple bolt and suspension tweaks transform this spirited hot hatch into an even more engaging drive.

The 2024 upgrade kit retails for $275, and costs for subsequent kits remain unannounced. Notably, Toyota says 20% of GR Corolla owners have opted for the upgrade—a solid figure given the model’s strong demand.

Ultimately, it’s refreshing to see Toyota emphasize vehicle longevity and owner upgrades instead of solely encouraging frequent new purchases.
