AMG Is Getting a New Boss. Mercedes Keeps The Mystery

The past several years have been challenging for Mercedes-AMG, to say the least. In September 2022, the Affalterbach team made a bold move by launching a four-cylinder version of the C63. As many know, this sports sedan’s introduction sparked significant backlash. While Mercedes doesn’t release separate sales data for its performance division, indications of deep discounts point to it not meeting AMG’s expectations.

Additionally, the recent recall of 219 AMG One hypercars due to a potential fire hazard hasn’t helped matters. This affects almost 80% of the total production and comes after prolonged development issues to adapt the F1-derived engine for road legality. That said, it’s not all bad news. A fresh V-8 powertrain is in the works, complemented by pledges for “highly engaging” electric performance vehicles.

These upcoming models will debut under new leadership at AMG. Mercedes is reassigning current CEO Michael Schiebe to the role of Member of the Board of Management for Production, Quality & Supply Chain Management, starting December 1, 2025.

Schiebe has headed AMG for about two and a half years, since his appointment in March 2023. He’s been with the company since 2004, taking on various roles over the last 20 years. For the time being, Mercedes hasn’t disclosed Schiebe’s successor at AMG, stating only that it “will be revealed later.”

AMG’s renewed focus on internal combustion engines positions it well against competitors like BMW M and Audi Sport. The new V-8 might offer wider deployment than the existing unit and deliver greater power, all while reducing fuel use and emissions to comply with Euro 7 standards. Rumors suggest the C63 could receive a larger engine, but not the V-8—perhaps a 3.0-liter inline-six instead.

In the electric realm, the GT XX concept is set to become an electrified super sedan, paired with an upcoming SUV variant. AMG believes it can attract customers with “the ultimate electric V-8 equivalent,” as Schiebe noted. Still, doubts linger about whether synthetic engine sounds and faux gear changes will truly convince buyers.

With strong inline-six and V-8 options for traditional enthusiasts, alongside EV offerings, AMG can appeal to a diverse audience. Mercedes has the resources to handle this expansive lineup, but the next leader will face tough challenges. Fingers crossed they revive the V-12, especially given Mercedes’ vow to sustain its biggest engine. Currently, the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 is reserved for the Maybach S-Class.

Regarding another street-legal car powered by a Formula 1 engine, that’s unlikely to recur because of stricter emissions rules.
