Rivian has successfully deployed an Over-the-Air (OTA) software update to address a recall affecting 85% of the early R1T and R1S vehicles. The recall, initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pertained to an accelerator pedal malfunction in certain 2022 Rivian models. The affected accelerator pedal failed to activate “auto-hold” or “park” as intended, posing a risk of unintended vehicle movement. The OTA update resolves the issue by recognizing the behavior and eliminating the acceleration in extreme heat conditions. Rivian, having identified and fixed the problem promptly, avoids the need for physical recalls and assures NHTSA compliance. Owners may also opt for a hardware replacement accelerator if desired. No accidents or injuries related to this problem have been reported.
