The Future of Lexus F Models

The original Lexus IS F revolutionized the compact luxury sedan segment with its 5.0-liter V-8 engine, flared fenders, and stacked exhaust tips. It paved the way for other V-8-powered F models like the RC F and GS F.

Seventeen years later, the F performance name continues to exist in some form, albeit awkwardly, in the IS500 F Sport Performance. However, recent reports suggest that the traditional Lexus F models might be on the verge of extinction.

In an interview with Drive, Lexus global head Takashi Watanabe hinted that the F badge might not be used in the same way in the future. According to Watanabe, the F badge represents “one expression” of performance within the Lexus lineup. He elaborated:

“As we move into the future, we’re going to be going to SDVs, software-defined vehicles. That’s also going to add a new element to this whole thing… The button you saw on the steering wheel represents a possible evolution forward, where F-Mode is being expressed through software, but we’re still touching upon the sportiness of the brand.”

A Shift in Performance Philosophy

Watanabe’s statement implies that the traditional F models with their high-performance hardware might be phased out in favor of a more software-driven approach to performance. Recent Lexus concepts feature an “F-Mode” button on the steering wheel, which is intended to capture the spirit of the F performance badge.

When asked directly about the future of Lexus F models, Watanabe remained non-committal, stating that the company doesn’t have a specific product plan in place.

A Glimmer of Hope

There is some positive news: Toyota and Lexus are developing a new V-8 engine, which is expected to appear in the upcoming sports car, rumored to be called the “LFR.” Toyota might also adapt this new V-8 engine for other vehicles, such as SUVs.

However, none of Lexus’s recent concepts or prototypes have worn the “F” badge. The latest Lexus Sport Concept, for example, doesn’t show a clear link to the brand’s performance division.

What’s Next?

For now, the future of Lexus F models remains uncertain. We can only wait and see how the brand evolves.
