Ford’s Secretive Initiative: Building Low-Cost EVs with a ‘Skunk Works’ Team

Posted on February 9, 2024February 9, 2024 by thecruisectrlr

Ford CEO Jim Farley unveiled a clandestine project during Tuesday’s earnings call, announcing the assembly of a specialized team to construct a low-cost EV platform. Farley referred to the team as a “super-talented skunk works team,” comprising top-tier EV engineers globally. This covert initiative, initiated two years ago, aims to create a flexible platform for various electric vehicle models, potentially including an electric Maverick. The move aligns with Ford’s shift towards affordable EVs in response to market demands and competition from Tesla and Chinese OEMs. Despite facing losses in its Model e electric vehicle business, Ford sees potential in software-defined vehicles and its Ford Pro unit, expecting continued growth and profitability in these areas.
