BMW’s plug-in hybrid i8 bid farewell in 2020, leaving enthusiasts eager for a successor. Rumors hinted at a modern homage to the legendary M1, and BMW’s design boss, Domagoj Dukec, recently unveiled the I16 coupe—a project developed to fill the i8’s void.
Dukec showcased renderings of the I16 on his Instagram, revealing its familiar yet futuristic design. Developed in under a year, the I16 shares its composite structure with the i8 and draws inspiration from BMW’s Vision M concept, boasting a 600-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain.
While reminiscent of the i8, the I16 features a more subdued appearance with notable updates like enlarged headlights and iX-like rear lights. Its proportions pay homage to the mid-engined M1, blending retro elements like rear louvers with modern styling cues.
Rumors of a modern M1-inspired supercar have circulated for years, with reports suggesting names like M8 and detailing impressive performance figures. However, despite its potential, BMW ultimately halted the I16 project in response to shifting market dynamics.
Although the I16 never reached production, its legacy lives on as a testament to BMW’s commitment to innovation and tribute to automotive icons like the M1.
