Motorists near Hollister, California, are set to experience the state’s first turbo roundabout, a novel traffic intersection design aimed at improving safety. Originating in the Netherlands in the 1990s, turbo roundabouts prioritize safety over speed, featuring raised lane dividers to discourage lane changes within the circular path. The design streamlines traffic flow by sorting drivers into appropriate lanes before reaching the intersection, minimizing complexity and potential conflicts. California’s decision to implement this innovative solution at the San Benito Routes 25 and 156 junction aims to address a higher-than-average collision rate compared to similar intersections across the state. Turbo roundabouts, already successfully deployed in Jacksonville, Florida, are gaining recognition globally for their ability to significantly reduce injury-causing crashes compared to traditional signaled intersections. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) estimates the project’s total cost at $14.9 million and anticipates its positive impact on safety at the crucial crossroads for commuters and goods transportation. As the Department of Transportation actively encourages the adoption of turbo roundabouts, Hollister may be the first in a series of California locations to implement this innovative traffic solution.
