The California Energy Commission (CEC) greenlights a $1.9 billion investment plan to advance the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure. This funding, combined with an existing $1.8 billion investment, aims to deploy 40,000 additional public EV chargers across California, contributing to the most extensive charging and hydrogen refueling network in the nation.
Governor Gavin Newsom underscores equity in the initiative, with at least 50% of the infrastructure benefiting disadvantaged or low-income communities, which often bear the brunt of air pollution. This investment aligns with Newsom’s broader $10 billion budget for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), complemented by federal funding and utility programs.
The funding plan supports California’s goal of deploying 250,000 public EV chargers, strategically located along highways and in commercial areas. These investments come at a crucial time, as the state approaches 2 million ZEVs sold, necessitating robust infrastructure to meet growing demand.
Additionally, the CEC is pioneering state regulations to enhance the EV charging experience, including standards for charger reliability and reporting. This performance-based approach will ensure transparency and empower drivers to make informed decisions about charging their EVs.
