Ferrari has unveiled a one-off model called the SC40, which pays homage to the iconic F40. Although it’s not a direct successor, the SC40 borrows design cues from the legendary car that was personally approved by Enzo Ferrari. The SC40 is based on the 296 GTB, but its body has been completely reimagined by Ferrari’s Styling Centre, led by Flavio Manzoni.

The SC40’s design nods to the F40 are subtle yet evident. The “SC40” debossing on the rear wing and the side intakes, which echo the F40’s NACA ducts, are testaments to the car’s heritage. While the original F40 was designed by Pininfarina, the SC40 is an in-house creation, marking a departure from Ferrari’s recent design collaborations.

Despite its F40-inspired design, the SC40 is not a replica or a retro-style model. Ferrari emphasizes that it’s “a model with its own distinct personality.” The car retains its underlying 296 GTB architecture, with the V-6 engine hidden beneath smoked Lexan louvres that further strengthen the visual connection to the F40.

The SC40’s exterior is finished in a unique white paint, with matching white wheels that are exclusive to this car. The interior, while largely based on the 296 GTB, features extensive use of Kevlar, covering elements such as the steering wheel, dashboard, floor mats, footwells, and seats.

Ferrari hasn’t disclosed the price of the SC40, but it’s expected to be significantly higher than the standard 296 GTB’s $346,950 base price. The car’s creation is a result of Ferrari’s Special Projects program, which typically involves around two years of collaboration with the owner on design and validation.

Only one SC40 will be produced, but a full-size styling buck is already on display at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. The possibility of another F40 tribute in the future isn’t ruled out, especially with rumors of Lewis Hamilton’s interest in collaborating with Ferrari on a so-called “F44” with a manual gearbox and F40-inspired styling.
