Ford Envisions Modular EV Assembly with Swappable Bodies in Patent Filing

Posted on January 7, 2024January 7, 2024 by thecruisectrlr

Ford is exploring a novel approach to electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing with a recently published patent filing that details a modular assembly method reminiscent of a life-size model kit. The patent outlines a process where the assembly of an EV starts with a subframe centered around the battery pack, featuring adjustable elements to accommodate various vehicle models. Front and rear subframes, housing motors, suspension components, and wheels, can then be attached to this rolling chassis. The final step involves securing a body onto the assembly. While the patent depicts an F-Series Super Duty, Ford suggests the technique could be applied to different vehicle types. The concept further explores the possibility of adapting wheel and suspension assemblies for varied ground clearances and introduces the idea of “performance packages” with interchangeable motors. While it remains uncertain whether Ford will implement these ideas in production, the patent offers a unique perspective on modular EV assembly.
