Ford Recalls 140,000 Focus and EcoSport Units Over Oil Pump Defect

Posted on January 11, 2024January 11, 2024 by thecruisectrlr

Ford has issued a recall affecting nearly 140,000 units of the Focus and EcoSport models produced between 2016 and 2022 due to a critical engine issue related to the oil pump. The recall encompasses cars equipped with a turbocharged, 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. The defect, affecting 100% of the recalled vehicles, involves a faulty engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm that can break, potentially leading to severe engine damage.

Key Points:

  1. Recalled Models: The recall, assigned number 23V-905 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), includes 26,041 units of the Focus built between March 24, 2015, and May 4, 2018, and 113,689 units of the EcoSport built between April 3, 2017, and October 12, 2021. All the recalled vehicles are equipped with the specified engine and transmission.
  2. Critical Engine Defect: The issue lies with the engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm, which has the potential to fracture and damage the engine. Ford warns that the failure of the tensioner arm can result in a loss of oil pressure, leading to significant engine damage. In the event of engine seizure, power-operated brakes can be affected.
  3. Safety Concerns: While Ford is aware of one crash allegation and two injuries related to the issue, no fatalities have been reported. The company emphasizes that warning lights such as “low oil pressure” or “check engine” may signal an impending oil pump-related failure. Additionally, loud noises audible to occupants may accompany an engine failure.
  4. Recall Process: Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail in February 2024. Upon availability of replacement parts, owners are instructed to visit authorized Ford or Lincoln dealerships for a complimentary replacement of the oil pump drive belt tensioner assembly with an improved, longer-lasting part. Motorists who previously addressed this issue at their expense before May 2023 are eligible for a refund.
  5. Response from Ford: Ford has reported 2,099 warranty claims related to this concern as of October 2023. The company is taking proactive measures to address the defect and prevent further incidents.
