General Motors Introduces Free Audio Streaming and Native Apple Music in New Vehicles
General Motors (GM) is now offering complimentary internet connectivity for audio streaming in select new cars across the United States and Canada. This feature, called Standard Streaming, is included in the automaker’s OnStar Basics connectivity package—available at no extra cost for all 2025 and newer GM models.
Key Highlights:
- Free Audio Streaming: Eligible vehicles get eight years of connectivity for music, podcasts, and news apps. However, users must still cover subscription costs for individual services like Spotify or Apple Music.
- Native Apple Music App: GM is rolling out a built-in Apple Music app for its Android Automotive-based infotainment systems. Cadillac owners gain an added perk: Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos for an immersive listening experience.
- OnStar Basics: The free bundle excludes premium features like crash response and navigation, which require a paid OnStar Connect subscription ($9.99/month for 2025+ models; $14.99/month for older vehicles).
Limitations:
- Excludes Older Models: 2024 and earlier GM vehicles won’t receive the free streaming or native Apple Music app.
- Unclear Post-8-Year Policy: GM hasn’t disclosed whether the free streaming will expire or transition to a paid plan after the initial eight-year period.
The Apple Music update is currently available for select 2025 Cadillac and Chevrolet models via over-the-air (OTA) software, with more brands to follow. This move enhances GM’s in-car entertainment options while incentivizing buyers toward newer models.
