Hyundai N Sub-Brand Expands with Hybrid Models
Hyundai’s high-performance N sub-brand is revamping its strategy to include its first hybrid model, the Tucson N. Based on spy photos of the next-generation Tucson, our colleagues at Gotcha Cars have created a rendering that showcases the potential look of this new model.
A Dual Strategy for Hyundai N
In a recent interview with AutoExpress, Park, a representative from Hyundai, stated that the N sub-brand is not limiting itself to electric vehicles (EVs) alone. “We’re not limiting ourselves to EVs,” Park said. “We will go further with the ICE-based cars as well; this is not the end of our journey.” This means that while models like the IONIQ 5 N and IONIQ 6 N will continue to lead Hyundai’s electric performance push, the N division will also develop next-generation petrol-electric hybrids that prioritize driving excitement over efficiency.
The New Hyundai Tucson N: Rugged and Powerful
The upcoming Hyundai Tucson N is expected to have a bold design inspired by the angular Hyundai Santa Fe. With a potential output of around 300bhp, this hybrid SUV will be powered by a next-generation 1.6-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, possibly paired with an electric rear axle for all-wheel drive (AWD) capability. According to Park, the Tucson N will be “lighter, more agile, nimble, and exciting,” indicating that Hyundai aims to deliver sports-SUV handling along with everyday practicality.
Hybrid Power with a Performance Twist
Hyundai has developed two hybrid strategies: one focused on maximum efficiency and another optimized for performance. For N models, the focus will be on the latter, with instant torque from electric motors paired with rev-happy petrol engines for a thrilling driving experience. “If we have a hybrid system in our N cars, the strategy will be different; to have more power intensely,” Park explained.
More Hybrid N Models to Come
The Tucson N is just the beginning. Park hinted that hybrid N technology could be applied to smaller, lighter models, paving the way for fast Kona N variants and electrified i20 N and i30 N hot hatchbacks. By reducing the weight of the battery, Hyundai can create more agile and responsive hybrid N cars that prioritize driving excitement over large battery packs. “If we can make a smaller model with a less-weighted battery, then it can be better,” Park said.
