Kia is implementing additional security measures to combat a rising wave of thefts targeting its vehicles, which gained notoriety through a TikTok trend in late 2021. The company is introducing a new theft deterrent device, specifically an ignition cylinder protector, for vehicles that are not eligible for a security-focused software update released in the previous year.
The ignition cylinder protector is a dealer-installed modification that became available on December 20. Kia plans to reinforce the ignition cylinder body with this free modification, aiming to thwart potential thieves from removing the ignition cylinder protector and ignition cover using methods popularized by the TikTok trend. It’s important to note that this deterrent is not a universal fix and will only be provided to owners of models that are not eligible for the earlier software update.
In addition to the physical modification, Kia will supply window decals for each vehicle that undergoes the ignition cylinder protector installation. These decals are intended to inform potential thieves about the presence of the theft deterrent.
The new modification is specifically designed for models equipped with a key-operated ignition system, including the 2011–2016 Forte, 2011–2021 Rio, 2014 Sedona, 2010–2021 Soul, and 2011–2016 Sportage.
Kia had previously addressed the security concerns by releasing a software update in the preceding year, with dealers installing the security-focused software on over 900,000 vehicles in 2023. Furthermore, the company is collaborating with local law enforcement to offer free steering wheel locks to owners whose vehicles are not eligible for the software update. Kia has already distributed over 325,000 steering wheel locks and commits to providing them as needed.
This move by Kia reflects a proactive response to the challenges posed by increased thefts and a commitment to enhancing the security features of its vehicles, particularly those that were targeted in the TikTok trend. The combination of software updates, physical modifications, and the distribution of steering wheel locks demonstrates Kia’s multifaceted approach to safeguarding its customers and addressing the evolving landscape of vehicle security concerns.
