As Kia navigates the rapidly evolving automotive landscape, the brand is gearing up for significant changes in its lineup, including a potential electrified Telluride SUV and a focus on educating consumers about plug-in hybrids.
Russell Wager, Kia America’s vice president of marketing, hinted at forthcoming decisions regarding hybrids and plug-in hybrids during the Chicago auto show. While Kia had previously ruled out electrifying the Telluride, Wager acknowledged that market dynamics have shifted, potentially opening the door for a hybrid or plug-in hybrid variant.
With consumer understanding of plug-in hybrids posing a challenge, Wager emphasized the importance of education in promoting their benefits. Kia plans to retool its Georgia plant to produce U.S.-made EV9s, qualifying for EV tax credits, underscoring the brand’s commitment to electrification.
While the Carnival MPV is set to receive a hybrid powertrain, a plug-in variant wasn’t seriously considered due to production constraints. Despite this, Kia remains focused on expanding its electrified lineup, with seven vehicles planned by 2027, including recently revealed EV3 and EV4 concepts showcased at CES.
As Kia anticipates market demands and consumer preferences, the brand aims to strike a balance between hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and EV offerings, positioning itself for a future driven by electrification.
