Electric G-Class Debut
The electric G-Class, previously teased as the EQG concept, will officially be unveiled on April 23 before its debut at the 2024 Beijing auto show. Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius first hinted at plans for an electric G-Class in 2019, underscoring the brand’s commitment to transforming its iconic off-roader for the electric era.
U.S. Availability and Specifications
While details on U.S. availability are pending, the electric G-Class is anticipated to launch alongside the updated 2025 G-Class range. Although specific specifications are yet to be disclosed, the electric G-Class is expected to retain key off-road capabilities, including a unique tank turn feature, essential for navigating tight trails.
Electric Powertrain and Features
The EQG concept showcased the electric G-Class’s robust platform and featured independent electric motors powering each wheel. This setup, along with a shiftable 2-speed transmission for off-road drive reduction, ensures comparable off-road performance to the conventional G-Class. The production model is projected to incorporate a high-silicon anode material in its battery for enhanced energy density.
