Mercedes-Benz’s New EVs Feature a Huge, Light-up Grille

The latest design trend from Mercedes-Benz is a massive, illuminated grille on its new electric vehicles (EVs). We first spotted this feature on the new GLC with EQ Technology, and it’s expected to appear on the upcoming C-Class EV. Now, Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener has teased an even larger version of this grille on a new sedan via Instagram.

The design is reminiscent of the classic S-Class sedans, particularly the “Fintail” W112/W113 S-Class and its successor, the W108/W109. The light-up grille is accompanied by a illuminated Mercedes three-pointed star hood ornament, a feature that’s been largely absent from modern Mercedes models except for some trims of the E-Class sedan and S-Class.

According to Wagener’s post, the new sedan could be an E-Class EV or potentially an electric S-Class, which is expected to be based on Mercedes’ new MB.EA platform and replace the EQS model. The light-up grille on the GLC features 942 LED pixels, recreating the segments of past Mercedes radiator grilles.

Under Wagener’s direction, Mercedes has been embracing bolder design and styling, with prominent lighting features and screen-filled cabins. While the EQ family of EVs was a misfire, Mercedes is not backing down from its glitz and glamour approach to its upcoming electric cars.

A Blast from the Past

The design of the new sedan is also inspired by classic Mercedes models, as seen in this photo of a Mercedes 250SE.

What’s Next for Mercedes-Benz?

As Mercedes continues to push the boundaries of design and innovation, we can expect to see more exciting new models in the future. Meanwhile, BMW is taking a different approach with its Neue Klasse EVs, shrinking its grilles instead of making them larger.
