MG is channeling its British heritage by expanding into Australia—Down Under, as they say. Once struggling under poor management, the brand has been revitalized with new investments. Now, it’s boldly entering the competitive Australian market with the budget-friendly MG U9 pickup truck.
Australians have a passion for SUVs and utes, with the Ford Ranger leading sales charts. Icons like the Toyota RAV4, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu D-Max also hold strong market positions. MG faces a tough challenge in convincing buyers that the U9 can compete with these entrenched favorites.

The MG U9 (also known as MGU9) draws heavily from the chassis and mechanicals of the Chinese Maxus/LDV Terron 9. Its exterior styling mirrors the Terron 9 but incorporates distinctive MG branding elements for a unique look.

The interior features an innovative aviation-style gear selector as a signature MG touch, while much of the cabin echoes the Terron 9. Standard equipment includes a digital cockpit with twin 12.3-inch screens. The top-tier Explore Pro trim elevates the experience with heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats; heated rear seats; a premium JBL eight-speaker sound system; a panoramic sunroof; and luxurious leather upholstery paired with a suede headliner.

Built on a ladder-frame chassis shared with the LDV Terron 9, the U9 has been rigorously tuned and tested for Australia’s demanding terrain. A standout feature is its multi-link independent rear suspension, which replaces the traditional leaf springs found in many rivals for improved ride quality and handling.

Under the hood is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine from SAIC, delivering 215 hp (160 kW) and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque—modestly detuned compared to the LDV version. It pairs with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and a BorgWarner 4WD system featuring a low-range transfer case for serious off-roading.

Optional electronically locking differentials for both axles enhance traction. The U9 offers a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs) and payload between 770-870 kg (1,698-1,918 lbs), positioning it well in the midsize ute category.

Pre-orders for the MG U9 are open in Australia, with first deliveries slated for late 2025. Entry-level Explore models start at AU$52,990 (about US$34,900), climbing to AU$60,990 (US$40,200) for the loaded Explore Pro.
