Porsche is elevating the electric vehicle (EV) game with its upcoming Macan EV, aiming to redefine range capabilities. In a revealing video, a pre-production prototype of the Macan EV showcased impressive results during a highway speed test, making a lasting impression as it gracefully handled a drive until the state of charge indicator reached a mere 1%.
While Porsche initially entered the EV arena with the Taycan, known for its racetrack prowess and luxurious ride, it fell slightly short in the range department, with an EPA-rated maximum of 246 miles on a full charge. The Macan EV, built on the state-of-the-art Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, aims to change this narrative.
The Macan EV boasts an 800-volt battery pack with an estimated gross capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours and the remarkable ability to recharge at up to 270 kW. This translates into an impressive 10-80% top-up in less than 22 minutes, setting a new standard for EV efficiency.
While Porsche has remained tight-lipped about specific details such as driving range, an opportunity arose for Kyle Conner from Out of Spec Reviews to test a pre-production prototype of the Macan EV on American roads. The highway range test, conducted with the AC on at an ambient temperature of 73 degrees Fahrenheit, saw remarkable results.
After a comprehensive five-hour journey, the Macan EV covered a total distance of 322.5 miles, retaining 1% battery charge. The average energy consumption stood at an efficient 28.9 kWh/100 miles, with an average speed of 60 miles per hour. Notably, the adjustable ride height was set to its lowest position for increased efficiency, while brake regeneration remained off.
In comparison to the Tesla Model Y Long Range version, known for its 310-mile rating under ideal conditions, Porsche’s Macan EV emerged victorious in surpassing even this benchmark. While pricing details remain undisclosed, the Macan EV is set to make its debut in the United States later this year, promising a new era of efficiency and performance in the EV landscape.
