SAE Sets Standards for Tesla’s Charging System, Paving the Way for Widespread Adoption

Posted on January 4, 2024 by thecruisectrlr

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has achieved a milestone in establishing standards for the use of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), known as the Supercharger Network. Through its J3400 standard, SAE released a Technical Information Report (TIR) outlining critical engineering parameters, enabling developers to proceed confidently with the deployment and commercialization of the NACS connector. The move allows non-Tesla automakers, including recent adopters like Volkswagen, Ford, and General Motors, to integrate their electric vehicles with Tesla’s charging infrastructure. This development is pivotal for accessing $7.5 billion in federal EV charging grants and aligns with the Biden Administration’s push for an open industry standard. While Stellantis remains a notable holdout, SAE’s efforts aim to enhance charging interoperability and efficiency across the electric vehicle landscape.
