Stellantis CEO Calls for 50% Reduction in EV Battery Weight by 2032

Posted on April 4, 2024April 4, 2024 by thecruisectrlr

During Stellantis’ Freedom of Mobility Forum, CEO Carlos Tavares emphasized the urgent need for the automotive industry to halve the weight of electric vehicle (EV) batteries within the next decade. Tavares highlighted that current battery packs, essential for achieving a decent EV range, add an average of 1,000 pounds (500 kilograms) of raw materials compared to traditional cars, which he deemed environmentally unsustainable. He stressed the importance of achieving a breakthrough in battery cell power density, foreseeing a significant reduction in battery pack weight by 50% over the next ten years. This move aims to address environmental concerns and mitigate issues related to lithium scarcity, a crucial component in today’s batteries. Tavares also expressed skepticism about hydrogen technology’s viability for mass mobility due to its high costs, emphasizing the need for more affordable solutions.
