Tesla recently initiated a stop-sale for its Cybertruck model due to undisclosed concerns related to the accelerator pedal. The decision came after a video circulated on social media, demonstrating how the pedal could become stuck in an open-throttle position, potentially leading to unintended acceleration incidents. With the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) now involved, the issue is gaining attention and scrutiny.
The video, initially posted on TikTok, showcased an owner’s experience with the Cybertruck’s accelerator pedal becoming wedged due to a loose trapezoidal cover. Although the owner managed to safely stop the vehicle and remove the problematic part, the incident underscored the potential risks associated with the Cybertruck’s powerful performance capabilities and robust construction.
Weighing approximately 6,600 pounds and boasting acceleration comparable to a Porsche 911, the Cybertruck presents unique safety challenges, particularly in the event of unintended acceleration. Given its formidable build and design, a Cybertruck operating out of control poses significant hazards on the road, prompting the NHTSA to engage with Tesla regarding the issue.
While the situation has yet to escalate into a formal investigation, the NHTSA is actively monitoring the matter and liaising with the manufacturer for additional information. While a straightforward redesign of the accelerator pedal could address the problem, ensuring Tesla’s commitment to implementing a thorough solution remains a key concern, given past incidents involving safety issues and recalls.
