Pre-production of the updated Tesla Model 3, codenamed “Project Highland,” has reportedly commenced at Tesla’s Fremont Gigafactory, which currently handles the production of all Tesla passenger vehicles. The refreshed Model 3, which debuted last year in Europe, China, and various Asia-Pacific markets, is now anticipated to make its way to the United States.
Recent photos shared on Reddit reveal numerous refreshed Model 3s parked at Tesla’s Fremont factory. While some have Chinese lettering on the back, suggesting they may be imports from China for development purposes, there are indications that at least some of these vehicles are indeed Fremont-made. A Reddit post highlighted a blue Model 3 with Chinese logos on the back but a VIN starting with 5YJ, a designation reserved for vehicles produced in Fremont. In contrast, Teslas manufactured in Shanghai, China, have VINs starting with LRW.

The facelifted Model 3 boasts improvements such as a more comfortable ride, a quieter interior, and various tweaks that enhance its overall appeal. Despite the first iteration of the Model 3 being well-received, the anticipation for the upgraded version in the U.S. market has been growing.
Previously spotted camouflaged and undisguised facelifted Model 3s on American roads, along with the factory upgrades at Fremont, have added to the buzz surrounding the imminent production launch of the U.S.-spec “Highland” Model 3. Reddit posts have even showcased a pre-production EV from Fremont with amber indicators, a requirement for the U.S. market.

The timing of the U.S. launch aligns well with the current landscape where the eligibility list for the $7,500 tax credit is notably limited. The original Model 3, for instance, qualifies for the full tax credit only in its Performance version, while Model Y customers can avail the entire credit regardless of the trim level. This makes the impending release of the updated Model 3 particularly significant, offering American buyers a more appealing option amid the limited choices for tax credits in the electric vehicle market.
