Tesla enthusiasts are abuzz with anticipation as hints of upcoming updates for the Model S and Model X surface in the latest firmware, revealing changes in efficiency packages, steering wheel design, ambient lighting, and the introduction of a front bumper camera.
The firmware version 2023.44.30.8 indicates that both the Model S and Model X will receive updated “efficiency” packages in 2024. Analysts suggest that these changes could be linked to alterations in the battery or drivetrain, potentially impacting the vehicles’ range. However, it’s emphasized that efficiency package adjustments don’t always guarantee improved efficiency or increased range.
Former Tesla service technician Anthony Spina notes that the last efficiency package change occurred in 2021, coinciding with an upgrade to the Model 3 and Model Y battery pack from 77 kWh to 82 kWh. Tesla also introduced more efficient motors during that update. Recent adjustments to EPA mileage estimates for Tesla models in the U.S. and Canada, while not related to hardware changes, have contributed to lower range estimates due to revised testing methodologies.
The firmware findings also unveil a new yoke for the Model S and Model X, featuring a mechanical horn in the center. This aligns with expectations that Tesla would eventually introduce a center horn, moving away from the small button on the steering wheel for horn activation.
Additionally, the firmware references reveal upcoming features such as ambient lighting and a front bumper camera. Ambient lighting, a popular feature in the Model 3 and Cybertruck, is expected to enhance the cabin’s high-tech ambiance in the Model S and Model X. Meanwhile, the front bumper camera, already present in the Cybertruck, is anticipated to improve visibility in tight parking spaces.
While these updates might not all roll out simultaneously, Tesla’s approach to efficiency-driven changes, rather than adhering to traditional model years, suggests a gradual introduction of new features based on the current supply and production optimization. As Tesla continues its commitment to innovation and adaptation, the coming year promises a fresh wave of enhancements for its vehicles.
