Toyota Issues Massive Recall Affecting Over 1 Million Vehicles
Toyota has issued a massive recall affecting more than one million vehicles due to a potential defect that prevents the rearview camera from displaying properly on the infotainment screen.
The Problem
According to the recall report, vehicles equipped with the Parking Assist ECU may experience two issues. The software can cause the rearview image to freeze when reverse is selected within a specific time frame after starting the car, or the image may not display at the next startup if the car is turned on and then off within a specific time.
Investigation and Cause
Toyota began investigating the potential issue in April 2024 after receiving field reports in Japan. During testing, the automaker discovered a software problem and decided to issue a recall, as the vehicles could fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The issue occurs when a vehicle is shifted into reverse within 0.7 to 2.6 seconds after ignition, causing the screen to freeze for up to 1.8 seconds. Additionally, the inoperative display issue happens when two 23-millisecond camera optical alignment data writing processes occur randomly during the first 12.5 seconds after ignition.

Solution
Toyota has already begun contacting affected owners and will instruct them to take their vehicle to a Toyota service center, where a technician will update the Parking Assist ECU software.
