Toyota Charges Ahead with New Affordable EV Models for 2026 Amid Slow Market Forecast
While 2026 is projected to be a slower year for U.S. electric vehicle adoption—due to expiring tax credits, relaxed fuel economy rules, and tariffs—Toyota is bucking the trend with two new battery-powered models. Leading the charge is the 2026 Toyota C-HR, a compact, budget-friendly EV positioned as a smaller sibling to the Toyota bZ (formerly the bZ4X).
The 2026 Toyota C-HR: A Compact Powerhouse
- Design & Platform: Built on the same e-TNGA platform as the bZ, the C-HR features a more compact frame—4 inches shorter in wheelbase and 6 inches shorter overall than the bZ—while still offering dual-motor all-wheel drive as standard.
- Performance & Range: With 338 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of around 5 seconds, the C-HR doesn’t sacrifice excitement. Its 74.7-kWh battery delivers an estimated 290 miles of range, nearing the coveted 300-mile benchmark for modern EVs.
- Charging: Like its Toyota EV siblings, the C-HR will feature a Tesla-style NACS port for seamless access to over 20,000 Superchargers across North America.
European Appeal: Budget-Friendly LFP Options
In Europe, the C-HR+ (the EV variant’s overseas name) will offer even more affordability with:
- Two front-wheel-drive configurations.
- Optional lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries—a 57.7-kWh or 77.0-kWh pack—promising lower costs and improved durability.
Trade-Offs and Pricing
The C-HR’s smaller size means tighter interior space, with 3 cubic feet less cargo room than the bZ. However, its accessible price point could make it a standout:
- Expected to start below $40,000 in the U.S., potentially under $35,000—positioning it as one of Toyota’s most affordable EVs yet.
Arrival and Availability
Toyota confirms the C-HR will hit U.S. dealerships in late 2026, alongside the updated bZ Woodland and Subaru counterparts. With its blend of performance, range, and approachable pricing, the C-HR aims to win over drivers eager for a practical, no-compromise electric option.
