Toyota’s Trademark Filings Fuel Mid-Engined MR2 Revival Rumors
Recent activity around the “GR MR2” and “GR MR-S” trademarks signals Toyota may be reviving its iconic mid-engined sports car, with filings made in Japan and Australia in late November 2025.

Key Details:

  • Toyota filed GR MR2 (Japan) and GR MR-S (Australia) trademarks covering vehicles and parts.
  • A new MR2 would join Toyota Gazoo Racing’s expanding lineup, alongside the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, upcoming GR Celica, GR86, GR Supra, and GR GT flagship.
  • Filings suggest the MR2 remains distinct from the mid-engined GR Celica prototype.

A Brief MR2 Legacy

The MR2 debuted in 1984 as an affordable mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car. Its second generation (1989) earned the nickname “poor man’s Ferrari,” while the third-gen (1999) evolved into a lightweight roadster before ending production in 2007.

What’s Next?

While Toyota hasn’t confirmed a new MR2, insiders suggest development hurdles have been resolved. If progress continues, a production model could arrive by 2027–2028—likely retaining a combustion engine despite the FT-Se’s EV focus.
