Ford Mustang Hybrid Development Revived: S650E Prototypes in Testing
Ford Motor Company initially announced plans for a hybrid version of the Mustang back in 2020, but the project was ultimately shelved. Recent reports, however, indicate that the American automaker is now actively developing an S650 Ford Mustang Hybrid.
According to sources, the upcoming model—internally codenamed S650E—is already “in operation.” Prototypes have reportedly advanced to the Technology Prove-out stage, where test mules are being evaluated with integrated electrification components.

Details about the powertrain remain scarce, leaving uncertainty as to whether it will incorporate a conventional hybrid system or a plug-in hybrid setup.
In 2023, Ford CEO Jim Farley hinted that while a fully electric Mustang might not materialize, a “partially electrified” variant could be on the horizon. This hybrid initiative fits squarely into Ford’s broader strategy to electrify every internal combustion engine (ICE) model in its lineup by 2030.
